Cleft Palate Clinic

The Reading Hospital and Medical Center’s Cleft Palate Clinic is one of only seven clinics in the state of Pennsylvania which provide the services necessary to rehabilitate children with cleft palate and cleft lip. Cleft palate and cleft lip occur when the natural development of the roof and upper front of the mouth is interrupted during the first trimester of pregnancy.

This rare disorder may cause speech impediments, hearing problems, upper respiratory infections, dental problems, middle ear disease, and feeding difficulties. Children admitted to the program can see up to 16 different specialists during their treatments and can remain in the state-sponsored program until the age of 21.
