Cochlear Implant Program for Children and Adults

A cochlear implant is a device which provides useful hearing and improved communication abilities for individuals with severe to profound hearing loss, who gain little or no benefit from hearing aids. The implant provides the function of the damaged or absent hair cells by providing electrical stimulation to the remaining nerve fibers. The device consists of a microphone, a speech processor, a transmitter, and an implanted electrode array.

In 1986, The Reading Hospital and Medical Center established the Cochlear Implant Program. A team of professionals, which includes a surgeon, audiologist, speech-language pathologist, and a psychologist, evaluate candidates for use of the device. Appointments can be arranged by calling the Speech and Hearing Center. Referrals are accepted from any source and patients are advised to check with their insurance carriers to determine procedures for coverage for the cochlear implant candidacy evaluation.
