Rehabilitation Services

The Reading Hospital for Post-Acute Rehabilitation offers the following highly specialized programs and services:

Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Patients with traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries are treated for problems including movement, memory, behavior, attention, thinking, speech, and language in our special Brain Injury Program. Rehabilitation is highly individualized, dependent upon each individual's functional level and activity tolerance. Family members are encouraged to be actively involved in therapy and nursing care so they may reinforce learning new skills.

Dr. Sanghoon Kim, Medical Director, is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

Spinal cord injury services include an expert clinical inpatient program, state-of-the-art assistive and therapeutic technology, unique outpatient therapy programs, and community reintegration services. Patients begin taking part in restorative programs immediately following their admission and initial evaluations. Therapies are offered seven days per week, and take place in The Rehabilitation Center.

Dr. Somkiat Hemtasilpa has completed a fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury, and many of our physiatrists have taken part in training at Thomas Jefferson University Regional Spinal Cord Injury Center. This additional expertise assures the best outcomes for patients.

Orthopaedic Rehabilitation

The orthopaedic rehabilitation program provides comprehensive rehabilitation to treat the loss of functional ability in patients with a wide variety of conditions that affect the muscles, bones, and connective tissues. Inpatient programs are offered in both The Rehabilitation Center and Transitional Care Center for:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip Fracture
  • Joint Replacement
  • Lumbar Laminectomies
  • Multiple Trauma Injuries
  • Spinal Fusion

Stroke Rehabilitation

Our CARF-accredited stroke rehabilitation program is customized to fit each patient and family. The stroke rehabilitation team is led by Dr. Mark Chai, Medical Director, who is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. This experienced team works with the patient and the family to identify goals and develop a dynamic treatment plan to improve the following:

  • Weakness and/or paralysis
  • Balance and coordination
  • Language and swallowing
  • Activities of daily living
  • Memory, thinking, attention, and learning
  • Emotional issues

Neuromuscular Rehabilitation

The neuromuscular rehabilitation program treats motion, mobility, swallowing, memory and judgment, speech and language, and balance and coordination impairments in patients with the following:

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
  • Guillain Barré Syndrome
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Parkinson’s Disease

Amputee Rehabilitation

The amputee rehabilitation program provides comprehensive rehabilitation to treat the loss of functional ability in patients who have lost a limb. Inpatient and outpatient treatment focuses on:

  • Balance, strength, and walking
  • Activities of daily living
  • Prosthetics
  • Emotional issues
