Approximately 40% of adults report some type of sleep disorder. For example, 35% of adults at some time in their life complain of insomnia, 2% of adults have sleep apnea (a condition in which the individual repeatedly stops breathing during sleep), and 1% of adults have narcolepsy or excessive sleepiness with no known cause. All of these are treatable disorders if correctly diagnosed.
In order to fully understand sleep and to classify various problems associated with sleep, the Hospital’s Sleep Center conducts an overnight sleep study or polysomnogram. Several physiological tests help determine the cause of the disorder and possible solutions. During the study, a sleep technologist records the data and turns the information over to a sleep specialist who draws a conclusion. Your family physician will be notified of the results.
Sleep occupies one-third of every day and sleep, or lack of sleep, has a profound effect on the remainder of the day. Sleep is vital to both physical and mental health. The Reading Hospital Sleep Center is devoted to the evaluation, treatment, and education of problems associated with sleep. For more information on sleep disorder or to participate in a sleep study, talk to your doctor. For more information about our services, call the Sleep Center at 610-988-8749.
