Volunteering at TRHMC

Volunteering at The Reading Hospital

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. Volunteers are an integral part of our Hospital team. They are people of all ages and from all walks of life, who give their time and energy to help others and make a difference in their community.

Please consider the following ways to volunteer at The Reading Hospital:

In-Service Volunteer Program

  • Year-round volunteer opportunities for adults and teens in over 30 departments of the Hospital. Teens must be at least 15 years of age. Day, evening, and weekend positions are available.
  • Please Note: Applicants must commit to at least 100 hours of volunteer time, in regularly scheduled four-hour blocks.

Junior Volunteer Program

  • Our junior program runs from June to August. This is a 10 week program; students must guarantee that they will participate for at least 8 of the 10 weeks. They must be at least 15 years old, or have completed 8th grade.

Volunteer Work Groups

Volunteers join others from around the community on regularly scheduled days to complete much needed service projects for the Hospital. Projects include pairing patient slippers, assembling patient charts, completing bulk mailings, making tray favors, etc. Teen and adult work groups are available. (Students must have completed eighth grade.)

Knitting Baby Caps

Volunteers knit baby caps to be distributed to every baby born at The Reading Hospital. We provide the yarn and instructions. Free knitting classes are available.

Friends of The Reading Hospital Volunteers

Join one of the 17 local Friends groups. Monthly meetings include planning and implementing fundraising projects, a general business meeting, participating in service projects, and lots of socializing.

Who can volunteer?

Teens who have completed the eighth grade through people in their 90s can become part of the volunteer team at The Reading Hospital.

  • Teens, college students, and adults exploring a career in the healthcare field
  • People seeking to gain valuable job experience
  • Retirees wanting to stay active in their community and share their years of experience
  • Former patients or their family members wanting to "give back"
  • Teens earning school community service hours
  • People who want to help others by playing an active role in their community

How do I become a volunteer?

Becoming a volunteer is easy. Simply view our Volunteer Openings and submit application online.

Or call the Volunteer Services Office at 610-988-8477, and we can help you decide which type of volunteering is right for you. In-service volunteers need to complete a simple application and an interview, undergo a tuberculosis test, have a photo ID taken, and purchase a volunteer uniform.
