Next to prevention, early detection is a key weapon in the fight against cancer. Recognizing symptoms, getting regular checkups, and performing self-examinations are all crucial components of this battle. Early detection examinations and tests can help save lives and reduce suffering from cancers of the breast, colon, rectum, cervix, prostate, testicles, skin, and mouth.
American Cancer Society Cancer-Related Checkup
The Regional Cancer Center offers free cancer screenings for oral, breast, prostate, skin, and cervical cancers throughout the year. We also distribute free colorectal cancer screening kits at local health fairs.
Through cooperation with our community, we hope to increase these screening programs and overcome the fear associated with these simple examinations.
After a tissue sample is removed, a Pathologist analyzes it under a microscope for the presence of cancerous cells. The Department of Pathology employs the newest staining techniques to identify cancers, and assists with individualized treatment plans based on each tumor’s cellular characteristics.
The Reading Hospital Department of Radiology provides state-of-the-art diagnostic testing. We offer the latest in CT Scanning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Nuclear Medicine Scanning, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scanning, Ultrasonography, Mammography, and breast imaging. The information gathered through the extensive diagnostic testing and pathology department is used to stage the disease; and in collaboration with the other cancer specialists, is used to outline an individualized treatment plan.
