Surgical Procedures

The American Society for Bariatric Surgery describes two basic approaches that weight loss surgery takes to achieve change:

  • Restrictive procedures that decrease food intake
  • Malabsorptive procedures that alter digestion, thus causing the food to be poorly digested and incompletely absorbed so that it is eliminated in the stool

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric BandingGastric Banding

A Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band procedure is a purely restrictive surgical procedure. A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small pouch. This pouch holds only a small amount of food, which is then passed through a small outlet created by the band into the lower part of the stomach. Because food is regulated, most patients feel full faster.

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric BypassRoux-en-Y Type of Gastric Bypass Procedure

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure is a combined restrictive and malabsorptive procedure. With this procedure, a small pouch limits the patient's mealtime food consumption. The food then bypasses the stomach and upper intestine, and mixes with digestive enzymes at a lower point in the intestine. This results in your body absorbing fewer calories from the food.
