Paramedics must be confident leaders who can accept challenge and a high degree of responsibility. They must have excellent judgment and be able to prioritize decisions, develop patient rapport, and act quickly in the best interest of the patient. Paramedics save lives. They instill hope in people who need help desperately. They must be compassionate and possess excellent medical skills.
The Paramedic Education Program gives students the opportunity to combine their educational and work experience in the community and in the Hospital. From this combination, students gain an understanding of continuity of care – from first contact with the patient in the field until discharge from the Hospital. The program includes didactic, clinical, and field experiences provided by The Reading Hospital in cooperation with advanced life support services in the Eastern Pennsylvania EMS region. Upon graduation, students are qualified to take the National Registry Exam for paramedics.
Enrollment is limited to certified Emergency Medical Technicians with one or more years of experience in emergency care. Qualfied applicants are admitted to the Program on a rolling basis. Interviews, an EMT exam, and a math pre-test will be conducted for each applicant.
